lpd, LPRng and CUPS: Printing Services Under Linux

The lpd package (not to be confused with the lpd line printer daemon) was the “classic” UNIX printing service. You won’t see it often except in legacy systems.

LPRng is a newer version of lpd, and is still used widely.

But the Common UNIX Printing Service (CUPS) has replaced lpd and LPRng as the standard printing service for Linux and Unix. Life is much easier under CUPS. To show you why, we’ll do a quick review of printing under lpd.
